‘see the future’

these were just some of the words that decorated the small building that had been purchased down the street from his bar. tonight, he’d had too good a conversation, and then a couple too many after he’d finished his work for the day. he’d suggested to his latest lingering patron that they both check it out, just for shits.

a cigar hung in his fingers, thickening the air around them and making it smell like molasses and leather. as he looked over, face half-shaded beneath the brim of a krookodile hat despite the time of day, he flashed a smile.

“y’know, what if she tells me some’n like… like my bar’s gonna burn down tomorrow’r some shit.”

he puffed from bittersweet brown leaf, hot on his lips.

“not sure if i’d even wanna know.”

Ash hisses against the sole of a worn boot, last inch of the cigarette twisted to extinction before it has a chance to sprinkle embers on his fingers. Although, calloused as they were and numbly warm as he is with whisky sitting merrily in his belly, would Angelo even feel it? [break][break]

“Well, it wouldn’t be the first time.” [break][break]

With the last of the smoke pooling from off his lip, lazily curled, its apparent that troublesome intent lays thick like the scent of leaf that drifts between them. Angelo invoking memory lane, when fumes had drifted through Ritual one evening. [break][break]

“It’ll be fine. Maybe she’ll have nothing but your good fortune to sing about.” Not like he believed in destiny - least of all ones read in shady alleys where remnants of a lively night lay scattered and pungent - but wealth promised would not be scoffed at, regardless of how much salt needed to be pinched. [break][break]

“And then you'll be able to afford those extra fire extinguishers you've always dreamed of. Problem solved.” Fingers tuck into his faded leather jacket, Angelo's thumb absentmindedly brushes a slumbering Dreepy nestled tight in his pocket.[break][break]

“Ready?” He flicks the butt into the gutter.

“tch. yeah, rest o’ the way, i meant.”

he smirked and reached into his pocket for a silvery humidor tube that glistened in the moonlight. he’d snuff out the cigar and save it for later.

his laugh was a little sore about the fire extinguishers. he’d gotten in trouble for that. ’extra’ would’ve been great, but ‘enough’ would be a solid start.

“that sure would be nice.”

and then, at being ready, he looked up at the building.

“yup. let's see what this shit's about.”

when they entered, the door opened with a chime and let into a dimly lit hallway draped in deep purple velvet and bright tassels, with moody, abstract wall-hangings. the smell of frankincense wafted, getting stronger as they went. although the building was small, they’d make several turns down inexplicably long hallways before reaching the source of the earthy aroma.

the incense burned from a thick brass dish at the center of an ornate golden table. kneeled on a colorful cushion atop a swirling and elaborate rug was a lone hypno—staring down at a crystal ball-like globe in front of it. it didn’t seem to notice that they were there.

the rest of the room was a bit of a mess, though the light didn’t hit much else besides the table. for this reason, it was especially startling when an espurr bobblehead sitting atop a dresser to their left suddenly squawked shrilly, “PLEASE, SIT! THE MADAME WILL BE WITH YOU SHORTLY!”

“goddamn—” roach jumped, looking around but not yet locating the source. there was a moment of silence before it piped up again at an awkward interval, apparently not finished. “DESTINY AWAITS!”
